A mother considers the unthinkable to stop a war. A husband may lose everything to watch over a world. A scrivener learns the terrible risk in the words she’s translating. The power of many sacrificing as one. These and more are the stories collected in this volume. Stories of people. Stories of war and sacrifice and friendship. They help weave the rich fabric of Orullian’s epic fantasy series, The Vault of Heaven, deepening the resonance of the world he’s created.

The Vault of Heaven Story Volume One Heaven Vault Volume 1 Peter Orullian 9780971290914 Books

It’s no secret that Peter Orullian has become one of my favorite authors. This collection of short stories is a good example of why. It’s also complementary to the full fledged novels, The Unremembered and Trial of Intentions.

I think for me, I liked the combination of the short explanations Peter gives of how and why each short story was written and the stories themselves. From a reader perspective, it certainly adds depth to the world he has created(and makes you slightly impatient for more novels). From a fellow author perspective, it adds to my already growing respect for the way he is able to string together words and create such a fantastic, believable, and intricate world.

The Vault of Heaven Story Volume One Heaven Vault Volume 1 Peter Orullian 9780971290914 Books Reviews

Peter seems to be losing his edge. He doesnt draw me in anymore.
Read by Sarah "This started out kinda flat but picked up a bit here and there. Not much suspense but not hopeful, dark, nostalgic or thoughtful either. At least the characters seemed realistic, sorta."
I really like everything by Peter Orullian, highly recommended!
I enjoyed these stories. I am familiar with the other books the author has created in this same world. I think this would be enjoyable for those people who have read the other books, as well as those new to the series.
I really enjoyed the story about Layosh. The rest of the stories helped to fill in back stories for the novels. Highly enjoyable.
I bought this series after reading an absolutely brilliant short story of a character in an ensemble book on villains and rogues. Peter Orullian's writing in "A Length of Cherrywood" was tight and elegant and descriptive. The character described was so incredibly real world deplorable it may be too shocking for some to even stomach. But I thought it was the best story in the book by far for originality (the new game of chance-wow) and heartily won the prize for the worst human being in a book of Bad People. And I'm a big fan of many of the other authors and characters in the collection. So I was thrilled to find an author I'd not heard of with a complete series to read without having to wait for the next installment that could put a character together well. That said...

The novels, not so much. Granted, the first book is laying groundwork for an epic fantasy so it can be ponderous in pace and size. The world building is great. There are really some interesting ideas and people. The first book kept my attention. The second, however, is a nightmare on so many levels I found myself loosing my place or begging to stop self righteous diatribes of characters as boring as their ideas. There are leaps for characters in there that just don't work. These have been addressed before-farm boys becoming master swordsman on the road to a fight? Haven't we already done that with bad fantasy too many times? There are also giant leaps of time continuity and changes or actions of heroes and villains alike that simply do not make sense they are so out of character. he worst for me are the ridiculous multiple political ploys and monologues in the second book that would not be tolerated ANYWHERE-even in a fantasy novel.

(POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT-skip to next paragraph) And the bit of education picked up by kids hardly old enough to drink being able to go toe to toe with scholars that have studied a subject for a lifetime? Please, that was just insulting.
(SPOILER ENDED)

So although the author was paid for the series in a moment of excitement, I had to stop at the second book. I might read another short story by this author, but there won't be anymore money paid for full length novels until there is a competent editor to rein in the silliness.
